General Thane - Animal Warriors of the Kingdom: Primal Series, Wave 2 - 2023, Spero Toy Enterprise
This is General Thane.
And this is his trash.
As mentioned in both Parts 1 and 2, I was intrigued by Animal Warriors of the Kingdom, but it was only once General Thane was unlocked as a stretch goal that I decided to actually buy in.
I like my gorillas.
So it kind of goes without saying that Thane was my most anticipated figure in my order.
But, with that much anticipation, it also sets Thane up to be a disappointment.
I like the figure, but I wanted to love it.
As you can see from the pictures, I’ve tried stripping Thane down. His pauldron and wrist bracers are removable and I think his shin guards could come off if you could get his feet off (which I tried with a little bit of force to no avail. Maybe with some heat, but, really, they’re not meant to come off). The skirt is a permanent fixture, which I get, but unfortunately the bicep guard (or whatever they’re called) is sculpted on. Well the strap is sculpted, and the armour is glued on.
Thane’s poseability is OK, but certainly not the same as the rest of the AWOK cast. It’s not surprising, given his unusual size and proportions. He’s got single-jointed elbows, with a pretty deep cut which gets the bend past 90 degrees, which is pretty good for single jointed. The skirt hampers leg poseability, and the shin armour is moulded around his feet so the ankle articulation is very limited. I think what the other figures have that I miss the most on Thane is butterfly articulation, especially without the double elbows.
But he’s a damn good looking gorilla, with two incredible portraits. I also really love the “x” scarring across his chest. It’s a sign he really got into some shit.
He comes with swappable hands, a set of gripping hands and a set of fists. He also has a very, very big hammer. Unfortunately, you can’t get much two-handed action with the hammer.
Look at the sculpting and paint on this shoulder strap. Absolutely incredible.
The hand and head swap-outs are a bit of a challenge. The hands are tight fit, and trying to swivel them out with his bracers on, they can wind up with a bit of paint rub on the hands from the bracers. The peg holes for the hands and head are at odd angles so they can be difficult to get in place properly.
But what a beast.
Even for my minor complaints, he’s still pretty great, and I think will stack up against the other gorillas in my collection quite nicely.
Comparisons
I had assumed AWOK was 6” scale, but it’s neither 6” nor 7” but more in a 6.5” scale and actually fits well with both. They look in scale with both Marvel Legends and Multiverse, Masterverse and NECA.
Ranking
#8 - Primal Ancients - Feral Beasty
I thought I would like this figure with the Beast Man-esque colour scheme, but it actually just makes him stick out from the rest of the pack. Still like him but least of all.
#7 Primal Ancients - Chunari Infantry
Really like this ape.
#6 Kah-Lee in Conquest Armor
Even though he’s lower on my list, I still wound up liking him more than I thought I would.
#5 Khor Doon
I thought he would be higher on the list but there was a bit of disappointment in the colours, which I thought would be more vibrant all around. Still looks great.
#5 General Thane
I can’t be mad at that face.
#3 Primal Ancients - Onyx
What can I say, I love a black panther.
#2 Lexion
A bad-ass looking kitty. There’s little touch of something extra with him.
#1 Chunari Legionary
Some things just stand out from rest.
I know you get to see them in person but I also plan to do a Kollector's Set ranking my apes.
I look forward to seeing him with your other gorillas!
