Containing the TK Problems for 2024
If 2023 felt a bit out of control, I have a plan for reigning 2024's toy kollecting in
I don’t have stats.
I’m not doing the math.
It’s just better for me, and for Lady Kent, if I don’t.
All I can say is there’s no debt, so it wasn’t *that* bad…but there’s so much less space now too. #spacedangerisreal #dopeoplestillhashtaganymore
This year was a lot, both personally, professionally and kollector-ly. The personal stuff comes in waves, as it tends to when you crest mid-life, and the professional stuff is just what it has to be if you want to pay for all the kollector-ly stuff. The kollector side of things was a struggle to balance wants-versus-needs (acknowledging that there’s no actual need for any of it). Some might even say it’s a “toy collector problem…”
I’ve successfully divested myself of “completist” mentality when it comes to action figures. I’ve learned to accept the limitations of budget and space in that regard, but what not collecting, say, every Masterverse figure has led to is a mindset of saying “since I’m not getting Whiplash then it’s okay if I get Sskur’ge” (even though he’s over twice the price and would take up more than twice the space). I sometimes manage to resist these thoughts, but my brain just concedes elsewhere.
And so, I need to give my brain some rules, some limitations and guidelines to collecting in 2024:
Kollector Constraints ‘24:
Nine (9) purchases from each of the five (5) following lines (aka “The Five”):
Star Wars Black Series (I already pared back in ‘23, so should be easy)
Masters of the Universe Masterverse (may be a few difficult choices depending on output)
G.I. Joe Classified Series (this will be difficult)
Marvel Legends (I’m not sure I even got myself 9 figures in ‘23)
Other/Random/Third-Party (this can be anything but the above)
Additionally, I can support One (1) Kickstarter (and I already suspect what this might be *cough*AWOK*cough*)
I can buy five (5) total non-figures (aka vehicles/playsets/creatures)
I can buy once (1) army builder figure (up to 4 figures)
Plus, for every 2 figures in The Five bought on discount (of 40% or more) I can add 1 additional figure
Contstraints Exemptions
I can, at my own discretion buy as many as I want of the following:
McFarlane DC Super Powers (I’m all in…for now, we’ll see how ‘24 goes)
Star Wars Vintage Collection (figures only, vehicles/playsets subject to the above)
Limits do not include:
Items already pre-ordered in 2023 that arrive in 2024
Items bought as presents for others
Items received as presents from others
Figures Lady Kent would otherwise purchase for the collection(s)
Also, I can always fill any slot in The Five with an Other/Random/Third Party offering, but I cannot fill an Other/Random/Third Party offering with SWBC, Legends, Masterverse or Joe.
I want to get into displays in 2024, like what Lady Kent does:
So accessories and pieces for dioramas aren’t subject to limitations either (playsets excluded).
I’ve already got my Spreadsheet created, with a few prospects added.
And a couple quick updates on the last post
I hadn’t realized that the Hiya Burning Godzilla aka Burnie'’s head had an articulated jaw with a moveable tongue. I mentioned some small disappointment with the figure’s articulation but this small bit of articulation absolutely turn whatever frown I had upside down. Thanks to Steven’s Toy Reviews for the tip off, as well as showing me how to play with my Hiya toys better.
The Tesseract set with TV Loki is one of the reasons I need rules like the above. I don’t need the cube nor did I really need that Loki (certainly not as bad as I thought I did). I didn’t have batteries for the cube when I wrote that post and now that I do… well, it’s a glowing brick.
You have to open up the clear plastic shell, extract the cube, break it apart, and press the button on the core, then reassemble it all for about a 5 minute glow that pulsates. There’s amazing tap-on-tap-off nightlight technology out there, or shake-activated light technology, why are we having to go through all this nuisance labour every time we want to turn it on?
Plus, all the Kents of agree that it doesn’t glow blue enough.
The set was a clearance buy, but still doesn’t seem worth it somehow.
Next time on TKP… the Top 9 of 2023
